CALDAS DA RAINHA

Birdwatching Observatory,
Óbidos Lagoon

2020

The project aimed to rehabilitate and rebuild a "stilted" pier, as well as create a birdwatching observatory, to meet the growing demand for the area as a birdwatching destination.

Fishing and shellfish harvesting are the main economic activities related to the Óbidos Lagoon and, as such, depend on this lagoon environment, playing a prominent role in the local economy and serving as the livelihood for many families. The "bateira" is the transport used by shellfish gatherers in their professional activity, and the "stilted" piers were created to anchor these boats around the lagoon, allowing easier transportation of mud during low tides and enabling access to the boats.

On the other hand, in terms of nature and landscape tourism, birdwatching is a growing activity both in the country and worldwide, attracting thousands of people. The Lagoon is a prime location for this practice, as various species nest and stay there. The "observatory" included in this project aims to fill a gap and is located at the entrance of the "Barrosa arm," where a "stilted" pier once existed, which conceptually inspired the wooden structure that forms the "observatory," shaped like a boat, situated in the wetland area, with access via a wooden walkway, similar to a pier.
